Three things to know

1. Every special guardian can apply for financial support

You can apply for different types of funding, whether that’s an allowance, for care and support, or further education. Formal criteria aren’t always easy to understand, but we can talk through what you’re entitled to and help you apply. Don't be afraid to ask, as it's important you are clear on what you and the child you care for can receive.

2. Speak up if your circumstances change

Rising costs, losing your job or income, illness, separation or bereavement can happen to anyone at any time. Speaking up will not jeopardise your guardianship. In fact, we can listen and help you find a way forward. Don't assume that we already know about the changes or that you have to take on challenges alone.

3. You can contact us about any money worries

Money worries can put a strain on relationships and can cause long-term problems if you don’t deal with the problem. We support guardians with issues including income, debt, gambling, addiction, illness and bereavement. We are supportive, non-judgemental and can help you find your way.

I’m taking care of him no matter what, but if I’m 100% honest, money was something I worried about a lot, even before I became a guardian. It’s important we all talk about it [money] more, as it feels taboo. But it’s not at all obvious how it all works for guardians.
